WildChat: 1M ChatGPT Interaction Logs in the Wild
Wenting Zhao and Yuntian Deng contributed equally.
Introduces consented, multilingual, multi-turn conversations with GPT-3.5 and GPT-4, together with timestamps and metadata for studying use across time and locations. The paper examines language and prompt diversity, toxicity and jailbreaks, and instruction tuning with WildLlama.
The collection pairs conversation text with timestamps, geographic metadata, hashed IP addresses, and request headers. These enable analyses of language-model use across conversations, locations, and time. Read the collection methods and analyses.

Dataset releases
The original collection has grown. The 1M and 4.8M names describe release families; current counts depend on filtering and subsequent removals. Open and gated versions serve different research needs.
Research using WildChat
An annotated selection connects each paper to the data it uses and the question it investigates, including privacy, safety, evaluation, information access, and synthetic training data.
Explore conversations with WildVis
WildVis is a separate visualization and search tool for WildChat and LMSYS-Chat-1M. Its filters and embedding maps help connect individual conversations with broader patterns.
Start with the sources
For most new work that does not require flagged content, the maintainers recommend WildChat-4.8M. Match the release and revision when reproducing an earlier study. The processing repository documents conversation reconstruction, redaction, moderation, and reserved evaluation data.
